Here He Comes: Josh McDaniels Will Interview for Bears Head Coach Job on Friday

Chicago Bears Rumors

Well, here’s some exciting news for your Tuesday: A league source tells Ben Volin (Boston Globe) that New England Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels will interview with the Bears ( … and New York Giants, blah blah) for the Head Coach opening this Friday.

Because the Patriots are on bye after earning the top seed in the AFC playoffs, McDaniels, arguably the top head coach candidate on the market, can meet with teams this week. Clearly, inquiring minds aren’t wasting time in setting up meetings with an in-demand coaching candidate like McDaniels.

In case you’re wondering what’s so special about him, McDaniels has nine years under his belt as the Patriots offensive coordinator. His two stints under Bill Belichick, and with Tom Brady, have been quite successful, as the team has ranked inside the top-10 in scoring every year he’s run the offense. His time as the Denver Broncos head coach (2009-10) and as St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator (2011) weren’t quite as special, but he’s still just 41 and is believed to have learned some lessons and matured a bit since returning to New England.

Unfortunately (but expectedly), the Bears and Giants aren’t the only team that will meet with McDaniels in the coming days. Tom Pelissero reports McDaniels’ first interview will be Thursday with the Indianapolis Colts. Pelissero calls McDaniels the “most coveted candidate” as of right now.

If you recall, the Bears have already lined up an interview with Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo for the weekend. DeFilippo is also expected to be a highly-coveted head coach, despite his youth and relative inexperience, because of how he’s helped Eagles QB Carson Wentz (a success that makes him a good candidate for Mitch Trubisky and the Bears).

One day after firing John Fox and receiving a contract extension, Bears GM Ryan Pace has rapidly identified some of the top head coach candidates for their open position and will get a round of interviews started this weekend. Excellent start.
